Graphic Designers – Find Out What They Do!

So, you are looking at becoming a graphic designer, but you are not exactly sure what they do?  This article will give you a better understanding of what kinds of skills you will need, plus give you an idea about a “day in the life” of a graphic designer.

As a graphic designer, you are mainly responsible for conveying a message or information to a consumer that is appealing and catchy.  This is done through a variety of methods, including magazines, books, billboards, even commercials on tv.

Having a creative mind is definitely helpful when pursuing this particular type of employment, but there are a number of other skills that you will learn when following this career path.  Much of the work is now done on computer programs, such as Adobe Creative Suite, so knowing your way around a computer is extremely helpful.  It is also important to understand how to best get your idea out there, depending on what information you are trying to express.  Understanding the difference between a variety of different methods of design is key to sending the best message possible.

It is also important to have good customer service, as well as excellent time management.  Often times you are working under a very strict deadline, and there is no room for error.  You need to be able to communicate effectively with the client to find out exactly what they are looking for, so that you are not producing a design that is not at all what they are looking for.  Education is important to begin on this career path, but as you continue to work in this field, what will most land you that next assignment is being able to establish your career with high quality and quickly produced designs.

Although this job can change from day to day, you can expect to be doing a lot of the same tasks often.   As mentioned above, you will be conferring with clients quite a bit regarding the design, layout, and time constraints on the task at hand.  After the design process, and the thumbs-up from the client, you will then be following the process of completing the design through to the end.  It is important to understand all facets of completing a piece of work, as you will need to make sure you have enough time to finish all processes in order to hand in the completed product on time.  It is imperative that you review the product for any imperfections, so being detail-oriented is an exceptional skill to have.
